Pull House, Vermont USA 2009

The house embraces local tradition of the barn with a contemporary geometric twist. One corner has been pulled and moved diagonally from its rectangular loci. This has folded the entry gable facade and created a strong diagonal southern facade. These distortions create some interesting spaces and juxtapositions. One can see a vernacular “saltbox” form or a simple barn neither of which are true. The pulled corner creates a dramatically rising double height triangular living room.  Several triangles are produced in the plan as a result of the diagonals. Rather than being odd they serve useful functions. The diagonal southern wall in the loft and the living room stretch both small spaces optically to give them a feeling of greater size.
